how do i copy a folder complete with contents of which some are locked by windows, hence the need for dos.

for eg to copy c:\temporary internet files to d:\windows\temporary internet files

i have got xxcopy but i'm buggered if i can get it to work under pure DOS. in an ms dos screen it works sweet but can't copy index.dat files. in DOS it ignores the " " command which tells it to ignore the spaces between in the file name.

Does copy *.* d:\windows\tempor~1 not work?

1st: type "dir" at the d:\ DOS prompt. Long file and folder names will be truncated.

Then (after checking the folder name) type the following:

xcopy d:\windows\tempor~1\*.* a:\

(assuming you want to put it on the a drive)

or change into the directory cd\windows\tempor~1
then type copy *.* a:\

why use xxcopy, have you tried DOS's xcopy?

I batch it and it copies long file names and spaces OK...

ths all. i finally got xxcopy to work.....just testing results at the mo. did it in ms-dos promt. must be tired ;-)

xxcopy from what i understand is an improvment from xcopy and it handked the long file names a breeze.

i just shifted all the internet folders to anther folder index.dats and all and everything seems to be working sweet.
