2 computers on different sites (totally unconnected)

started to delay their printing.

Both sites are mid range pentium class machines
Both sites are running win 98se
Both are using HP deskjet printers (different models)

Both now take one minute before a print file arrives at the printer..
(seems like forever) (previously 6 seconds approx)

only other thing in common is the Etrust EZ antivirus.. any ideas

Are you using spooling or direct printing? When spooling the whole print job has to be processed to a temporary print file before it gets sent to the printer. If direct the data starts going to the printer as soon as possible. The converse side of the coin is that with spooling as soon as the job has finished going to to spool file you can get on a do other things while the job is printing but with direct you have to wait until printing is done before you can use the app again.

you pays you money ...

Thanks JST...

Yes we've tried all that..
a pain isn't it..
The only other common denominator is the EZ antivirus..

They (com Associates) have sent a .REG registry patch so I will be
trying that... (carefully)

From another forum, to a question on slow printing to an HP inkjet...

"Your virus software could very well be conflicting with the printer driver. From the tests you ran, it appears that they could be conflicting. Go into your Anti Virus softer then into Options and then go to Auto Protect tab and go into that area and go to What to Scan? All Files or Program Files. You want to choose Program files and NOT all files. You will still be protected because it will scan all executable files. All viruses are contained in executable files so this will continue to protect your system. "

So it would suggest that the antivirus software may scan the spooler files if set to "all files" probably?

YEE Ha... EZ / E Trust sent a registry patch....

Fixed it in a flash... The patch is a .REG file that autoinstalls...

The HP printers are now behaving exactly as before and no other
problems apparent..
