Codemasters has announced that their expansion pack for Operation Flashpoint, Operation Flashpoint: Resistance has commenced shipping. The pack offers graphical and other engine enhancements, an additional 100km2 island complete with varied locations from industrial-style buildings to rolling landscape scenery. To install the pack you will need the original game to play.

A new Beta 3.0 of Day of Defeat (http://www.dayofdefeatmod.com/) the Half-Life mod has been released. The new version has four different methods of download and includes fixes and enhancements, including the addition of a new "Para" gameplay mode, cutscenes, removable helmets, and a new spectator system. You can pick your download method from the huge list of mirrors at the link above.

A new version 1.33 of the Seismovision Demo Player (http://www.planetquake3.net/seismovision/)for Return to Castle Wolfenstein has been released. The new version offers an AVA file, adding protocol 57, 58 and 59 support to version 2.01 of the utility. Raven Software and LucasArts have released the patch for Jedi Knight 2 mentioned in yesterdays news. The patch offers the following:
Includes EAX(r) ADVANCED HD(tm) Audio Enhancement, featuring 3D positional audio, Environmental Morphing(tm), obstruction, occlusion, and advanced environmental reverberations, specially developed for Jedi Outcast. To enable this feature, simply enable the EAX option in the Sound Setup menu.

NOTE: EAX ADVANCED HD game audio technology is only supported by Creative Labs' Sound Blaster Audigy Family.

Multiplayer:

* Include 4 new Multiplayer Duel levels, which support BOTs.
* The new levels are:
*duel_bespin, duel_temple, duel_hangar, and duel_training

* Corrects an issue where players were unable to cycle to detonator packs and trip mines on the “explosives” key unless they also had Thermal Detonators.

* Corrected an exploit to prevent players from using illegal models in the game.
* Corrected an exploit that allowed players to have force powers outside of what the server rules allow.
* Added a keyboard icon that appears over the player's head when the player is chatting or configuring force powers.
* Backflip now requires that you double tap the jump button.
* Lightsaber usage in multiplayer has been modified to work similarly to the way it works in single player levels. This will enable better saber battles up close with your opponent.
* Lightsabers will do less damage at the very start and very end of a swing. This should prevent kills from just touching an opponent with the tip of your lightsaber.
* Other players will not see the glow from a player using force absorb until they are attacked.
* Force Heal and Force Drain have been adjusted to require more force energy to use them.
* Corrected an issue that prevent lightsaber locking from occurring in duels even if it was enabled by the server.
* Correct various Duel mode issues, including:
* Reconfiguring force powers will not place your player at bottom of queue.
* If one player leaves during a match when dueling with more than 1 kill limit, the next person in line will not enter the match with the score of the person who left the match.
* Changing skins will no longer produce a loss score on HUD that includes fraglimit.
Single Player:

* Corrected an issue that would cause the third AT-ST on Artus_Topside to disappear that prevented Jan from landing.
* Corrected an issue that caused enemies not to be alerted by the body of a comrade in their field of vision.
* Corrected an issue where enemies did not try to avoid thermal detonators that were thrown at them.
* Corrected an issue that would cause the player to be unable to attack for about thirty seconds if they were force pushed out of a saberlock.

A new worm virus labelled Datom.A has started circulating posing as a Microsoft update. The virus is disguised as copyrighted Microsoft code and claims to be a Windows update. The worm may arrive as an email purporting to be a Microsoft update, but it can also spread through open network shares. The actual worm itself consists of three components: MSVXD.exe, MSVXD16.dll and MSVXD32.dll, created using Borland C++. Here's some more detail on the worm:
"Taken separately, these files cannot be considered as malware, but together they form a pretty malicious code," said Costin Ionescu, virus researcher at BitDefender.

Aside from dropping copies of itself in all subfolders and network folders, experts have said that the worm may mark a significant evolution in virus coding because of the unusual tricks it uses to hide itself. Relevant strings of characters are stored in an encrypted format in the virus files in order to avoid disassembly and analysis, and the virus also uses a few anti-debugger tricks.

The worm uses another trick to make itself 'invisible' in the registry and kills personal firewall Zone Alarm if it is found running, before attempting to connect to the Microsoft website. It is also thought that the worm tweaks the registry and modifies the default application that opens .html files - presumably a web browser. But it is unclear exactly why it does this or why it tries to connect to Microsoft's website.

Microsoft has issued a small update to DirectX 9.0 beta testers to address some minor network connection issues related to DirectPlay. This update will be incorporated into the next beta and also be included in a possible DirectX 8.2 release before DX 9 is out in October. Networking Resources (http://www.networking.tzo.com/net/software/) has developed a new version of its 'PCI Latency' Patch For VIA Chipsets. The new version is 0.20 and is intended to fix the following problems in VIA based motherboards:
- Files copied from one IDE hard disk drive to another are corrupted
- The computer stops ("freezes", "hangs", "locks up") when playing sounds, especially to a Creative SoundBlaster LIVE! card
- The computer stops when copying to or from an IDE DVD, CDROM, or CDRW drive Sounds played by a Creative Labs sound card are distorted
- NOTE: It does not apply any fixes to AMD chipsets, such as the 750 or 761.
