Warcraft III has gone gold <http://www.shacknews.com/docs/press/061302_wc3.x>. Here's the deal on the storyline:
In the single-player game, players follow the adventures of Legendary Heroes, who grow more formidable with experience. As the game progresses, these Heroes are able to learn spells and special abilities and acquire powerful magic items. Heroes advance even faster in multiplayer games, adding to the intensity of strategic combat between rival powers. Expanded multiplayer options include the ability to share units and resources with allies and to compete anonymously against other players of similar skill levels. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos also includes the most powerful and full-featured World Editor ever released for a Blizzard game. The World Editor puts the same tools used by Blizzard's designers into the hands of players, enabling them to create 3D maps and unique missions, with scripts for units, spells, and action-packed events. Players will also be able to produce their own in-game cinematics, using flexible camera controls and incorporating .mp3-based sound files.

The first JPEG infector virus is out. The virus goes by the name W32/Perrun and has two parts, 1. infected JPEG images that contain the virus's payload and 2. a viral program that extracts the code from the images and infects other JPEGs on the system as they are opened. The extractor file only infects computers running Microsoft Windows and doesn't include a mass-mailing component. And, in fact, the virus has not been released on the Internet, but has been sent only to major antivirus companies by the creator of the code. You can read more about it over at ZDnet <http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-935766.html>.

Microsoft has posted up a demo of their new Corona media technology which is designed to improve internet streaming by introducing Fast Stream, which gives an instant-on, always-on experience, bringing home-theater-like audio and video quality to broadband PC users. Corona introduces two new professional level audio and video codecs. The new Windows Media Audio Professional is the first codec to enable Web-based delivery of 6-channel surround sound with full-spectrum, full-resolution audio (24 bit/96 kHz sampling). A new version of the Windows Media Video codec provides a 20 percent efficiency boost compared with the previous version and now introduces the ability to provide HDTV-like video quality at file sizes half that of today?s DVDs, for local playback on the PC. Have a look at the demo here <http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/demos/producer/Producer_Fast_Streaming/Fast_Streaming.htm> and scoot on over to the Corona Homepage <http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/thirdgen/default.asp> for more info.

WinMX 3.11 Beta 2 has been released. WinMX is one of the new file-sharing programs on the market aimed at expert users and this new version includes the following changes:
- corrected major bug that caused crashes when # of total uploads (dead or running) + download connections + OpenNap servers + channel connections >= 1024
- major re-write of all bandwidth throttle code, old version was allowing outgoing UDP packets to violate bandwidth throttle, which then causes other problems for users with primary connections, especially ADSL users with limited outgoing bandwidth
- major re-write of channel redirect code, however it hasn't been tested under real-world conditions yet
- bandwidth graph paint code has been greatly streamlined, was taking too much CPU time
- dangerous filetype warning suppress should work now
- bandwidth throttle now has adjustable resolution (and defaults to 200ms instead of 100ms in v3.1 ) << master window second row buttons will now always show in appropriate mode, even if channels and searches are undocked
- secondary connection can be cycled without losing channel connections (click the 'Make Secondary Connection' radio button, and your current connection will be disconnected and WinMX will find a new one.)
- secondary connection message scheduling, so simultaneous searches don't drown each other out
- secondary search stop command, eliminating wasted bandwidth when a search is halted prematurely
- channel flood algorithm now includes /action /emote /me messages
- default channel user limit now 40 instead of 10
- several other minor bug fixes
Very Important: Due to certain protocol changes, BETA 2 connects to it's own network, separate from ALL other versions of WinMX, including BETA 1. Therefore, the amount of search results and other users will be very small compared to other versions. If you are uncomfortable with this, please refrain from downloading BETA 2, as we will be releasing a final v3.2 very, very soon. Also, due to the very small initial size of the network, you may experience some delay connecting. Please just let it run and be patient.
