the following info is From www.ccsi.canon.com

Error Codes (Flashing Lights and Beeps)

Error Condition On Line HS HQ Error Beeps

Paper Misfeed Off n/a n/a On 3 Times

Paper Out Off n/a n/a On 3 Times

Paper Jam Off n/a n/a On 4 Times

Controller Error Off Blinks Blinks ON 3 or More

If the ERROR light comes on and the printer beeps, check for a paper mis-feed or paper jam.

a. Check the sheet feeder. If the paper has mis-fed or the printer is out of paper, reload paper into sheet feeder.

b. Check the printer for a paper jam.

If the ERROR light comes on and the ON LINE, HS, and HQ lights are blinking, a controller error may of occurred. Follow the steps below to try to resolve the problem.

a. Press POWER button to turn off the printer, and then unplug the power cord.

b. Wait several minutes. Plug the power cord back in, and then press the POWER button again to turn on the printer. If the problem has been cleared, the ON LINE light will blink for several seconds and then become steady. The BJ cartridge will move to the Home position. If the problem continues, the printer will need to be repaired.

Further NOTE:

If online is flashing, and HQ is lit solid, one beep isn't actually an error - it is indicating that the cartridge is 'displaced' - normally fixable by reseating, sometimes needing replacing... (and that's why the carriage stops in the middle) - if you've tried that one, then it's possible that some ink has got onto the head controller (the plate that the cartridge matches up to) and caused some corrosion... printer needs repairing.

Cheers, Babe.
