Depends what you want to do with the icon files. If you just want to change the icon for a shortcut or a program, you right-click on the icon you want to change, select properties, change icon, and browse to the folder where you saved your icon, and choose it as the icon to display.

If you want to EDIT an icon file, ie, OPEN it WITH something to change how it looks, you will need an icon editor program, there are shareware ones which you can download from the net.

If you double click on an icon file, (something.ico) WIndows will think you want to EDIT it and bring up the OPEN WITH dialog. But if you have no icon editor installed, there 'be anything to OPEN it WITH.

If you just want to have a look at the files try reshacker <http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker/>, typically this app is used to look at the resource structure of an executable (*.exe) file, however it should be OK for viewing *.ico files.

If you want to edit the icons, have a look at MicroAngelo <http://www.impactsoft.com/> which is quite a nice icon editing program (i think its got a 30 day trial period, but don't quote me).

Hope this is of some help,
