I've had xp on a 1300mhz, 128mb, 40gig hd, HP for a month now and have realised that it's slower than my old w98, 333mhz, 160mb, 6gig, hp I had before! does anyone recon that I'll speed things up if I got another 128mb ram or should I go back to w98?? ps, they're both celerons

yes upgrade the ram as 128 in minimum for XP. there are also several tweaks out for XP.

Definitely.

I have a machine with almost identical specs as yours. It was also a pig under XP. I uninstalled the indexing service which took 25 seconds off my boot-up time, and made general perfomance increases.

I then added 256mb RAM to my 128mb. I gained another 8 seconds on boot-up (from the time the bios is finished to I have a working desktop with all start-up apps loaded in 35sec - before it was 1min 5sec) General performance, however was the greatest improvement with the extra RAM. my apps now open immediately. I used to wait 3 or so seconds even for IE to open, now it is instantaneous.

Get the bloody RAM!

Yuck..XP! Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Chuck.
Go back to Win98SE (or upgrade to Linux if you don't mind some education).
Oh, and get the RAM anyway... :-)

I take it you've had xp and didn't like it then Geoff? It doesn't seem too different to 98 apart from all the crashes and re-starts every five minutes that I don't have to do any more. And no I don't fancy putting even more time in, than I am already trying to get the damn comp to do what it's suppose to do...
buying a bit of ram seems much easier!!
