does anyone know what the best procedure is to put an xp and linux redhat os onto two partitions on a hard drive? linux first on the d: then install xp onto c: to use the microsoft boot manager, or some other way is better?

Basically, have the MS thing installed first. The partition meant for Linux should *not* be a partition.
Use FDISK to delete it! Unallocated disk space is what the installers like.

Then RTFMs ...
Have a look at the forums: 'Linux/XP' in google will give you some ideas from people who have done it.

Have a good look at the HOWTO files on your installation CDs, and the READMEs etc at the root of the install CD. Those will give you uptodate information for your distribution.

I triple boot. Loaded Win95 first then Win2000 then linux RH7.3 . Win2000 handles the windows booting with Lilo comming up first to choose between Win & Linux. I prefer to use Lilo because you can use the uninstall option and reload the previous MBR whereas Grub does not allow that.
