Two questions:
Does anyone know why sometimes copying a file to floppy with my XP laptop results in spaces turning to %20 (my file.doc becomes my%20file.doc)
Secondly, anyone have a good program for using to download large files that get interupted and can pick up the download later (not FTP)- I would like to downlooad some big mp3s...
thanks Paul

for downloading i prefer flashget http://www.amazesoft.com/ has spyware but you can remove it if you buy it. not sure if the fakespyware(cydoor) dll trick works with it.

Getright and Go!Zilla are both download managers though Go!Zilla does have some spyware.

I'd have to agree with tweak'e FlashGet is really good. The ability to righ-click and select 'download all' is great.

The format (FAT12) and directory structure for floppy disks were copied from CP/M.

'Space' is not a legal character *inside* a DOS filename (the '8' part of the '8.3' file name format), so if you have a file called 'my file.doc', the space is being replaced with the ASCII code for space: written as '&20'. If the file was called 'myfile.doc' it would be stored as 'myfile__ doc' (I use '_' here to indicate 'space' and the '.' is not stored), and appear as 'myfile.doc' because the trailing spaces are omitted when it is displayed.

If the saving programme had sent the name as 'my file.doc' you would have seen it as 'my.fil' (or 'my.doc'), because the space terminates the name (and I'm not sure how it chooses what to save as the extension). The '&20' might be messy, but all compromises are messy.

I use Download Express for Internet Explorer (http://metaproducts.com/mp/mpProducts_Detail.asp?id=18). It's only 200K but unfortunately is not available for Netscape.

It's free for non-commercial use and contains no spyware or banner ads.

It allows you to control the speed of the download with 4 configurable settings (Background/Low/Medium/Unlimited) plus has the features of the other download managers.

Download it from http://metaproducts.com/mp/mpProducts_Download.asp?rid=277&fname=desetup.exe
