View Full Version : Jetstart download speeds

I'm on Jetstart and am curious about when I download from say Audiogalaxy and upload to Audiogalaxy and download from say Tucows all at the same time, my download/upload speeds read 12000bps, 9000bps and 7000bps respectively. The question is, I thought Jetstart users were capped at around 12800bps!. Now I know Telecom don't like giving out free lunches and my tertiary education tells me that 12+9+7=...um...2+9+7...carry the 1...um...damn! where that calculater.....ok,ok, I'll stop being a dick..but I think you know what I mean...does this really mean that my transfer rate is around 28000bps or is there some other reasonable explanation...thanks

I think there might be a zero missing somewhere - Jetstart is 'notionally' 128000 bps

O.K. I might of left out a zero here and there, but it doesn't change the fact that the cumulative total equals 280000bps or 280Kbps...or come to think of it, I could have been downloading 60meg files at 2.8kbps AND they only took around 60 minutes to download...I don't think so

Hi Ron

I think you are getting your bits and Bytes mixed up....

128,000 bits per second is 16,000 Bytes per second, less redundancy and overhead of 10% - 30% so should be less than 16kB/s.

Your download is reported as kB (note the big 'B' for Bytes, or 8 bits) and the speed is quoted by Xtra with a little 'b' for bits.

Theoretically, maximum speeds would be in the 16kB region however I have seen mine at 20+kB. I have just updated my antivirus definition, it downloaded 1.54 megabytes at 185 seconds, or 8.324kiloBytes per second, which is normal average. On a NZ site it does run around 16kB/s

It also depends how far you are from the Telecom exchange and how the bandwith is shared at the time...

I am only applying maths here, so someone may shoot my theory down, I look forward to seeing other postings!!

To add to Trevors post, one of the figures given was an UPLOAD, so this doesn't count towards download speed. Jetstart is 128k BOTH ways, which means upload at 128k and download at 128k at the same time. Which would bring it down to closer to that 16kB figure.
