A kind person has advised me that I should start my computer in Safe Mode to fix a problem. How do I start in Safe Mode?

Press F8 (close cousin to pressF1) as your computer is going through the initial bios startup, before 'starting windows' appears. You can press it several times to make sure it gets recognised. You should then be presented with a menu from which you can select Safe Mode. If you don't see the menu and the computer continues to boot up windows normally - shut down and try again.

I believe it's the Crtl key in W98 - F8 for 95.

Donald. Long time since I used this, but there is a good help file on windows in your computer. Open Windows explorer - click on the + sign alondside windows folder - click on help folder and in the right pane open widows.hlp. Search in this for safe mode and it will explain all. Or on 2nd thoughts, use the find command for windows.hlp.

most comman 2 ways is by pressing f8 repeatedly or by holding down the shift key while booting. note- shift key dosn't always work with some pc's.
