is xp compatible with win98 fat32?

had hardrive partitioned into three drives with randish and XP installed one one. put drive into win98 machine to transfer mp3s over to 2nd partition. all ok untill reinstalled into XP machine. no boot. mp3s lists ok but the XP drive lists as being a fat16 drive. go figure.

also the mp3 drive wouldn't defrag so i chkdsk and it repaired it. works ok but i'm wondering why it stuffed out so badly. anyone?

Tweak'e,

As far as I understand it, Fat32 is standard between all Microsoft operating systems and therefore should be fully compatible with XP.

The problem may have arisen if your XP partition was formated as NTFS. Windows 98 would have been unable to recognise the newer format and could have corrupted the master boot record. Restoring a backup copy of the MBR may have resolved the problem.

unfortunaly it was formated with fat32 on all partitions.

could have been a fault with the partition program :-/

all converted to NTFS and is running sweet. but having said that my main pc just spat out windows. i've only just fin an overnight reinstall to gets thinks working....the joys of windows ;-)
