View Full Version : Run CPU at slower speed?

I have a Gigabyte GA-6WMMC7 motherboard running a Celeron 500 CPU. I would like to upgrade to a faster CPU, but the manual says that the fastest CPU it will run is a 800Mhz.

800 chips are no longer around, and as I can get a Celeron 1000 for around $200, is it possible to use that and run it at 800Mhz?

Here is a link to the PC support list for your motherboard........

http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/user_pdf/i810_370.pdf

according to that it will support a 900 depending on the board revision and your bios........there is every chance it will run the celeron at it's full speed but if it can't it will just run it at the lowest supported multiplier.

I think you have a couple of problems:

1) The clock multiplier in celerons is fixed (e.g a 500Mhz celeron has a multiplier of 7.5) This multiplier on a 66Mhz FSB gives the 500Mhz. From 800Mhz and up, the celerons went to a 100MHz FSB - therefore a 1GHz celeron has a multiplier of 10. If you ran a '1000' Mhz chip at 66MHz FSB, you would only get 667 MHZ.

You would also have to make sure the chip you used was not based on the Tualatin core - I think this came in at 1000MHz. (There are some 1000MHz chips based on the older 'Mendicino' core and some (known as 1000A) based on the Tualatin. Your mobo supports the Mendicino based chip.

I think if you look on the gigabyte site ,under details for your mobo, the max celeron you can fit is now 900MHz. You should be able to still find 900Mhz chips if you hunt around.

Try this site ,Wellington based

No This IS Not A Plug !!!
they just have cheap stuff ..Note prices EXCLUSIVE of Grand Stealing Time Eg G.S.T

Thanks for your replies, it looks as though the motherboard will take a Celeron 900, and have discovered that Nodes Technology in Auckland have them.
Computerlink in Wellington were helpful but don't have less than 1000MHz celerons in stock.
Thanks again
