View Full Version : Locked modem in linux

20-04-2002, 02:06 PM
I have just reinstalled Redhat Linux 7.1 and followed all the instructions in the 'Redhat Linux for dummies' book and when I try to dial using the '/sbin/ifup ppp0' command, it waits for about a minuite and then just stops. I have looked in the /var/log/messages file and it said that it was locked by a pid. I looked to see if there was such pid when it was trying to dial and there were no pid's like that at all. Any help on getting my modem unlocked would be greatly appreciated.

Well that's better than we had before.

Might the process have been the (root) process which set up the PPP system?

I don't know if this is actually a problem, but I would always do dialling out as a 'user', not root.

Have a look for the lock file in /var/locks ... remove it if the process which set it has finished. (try 'ps -aux | grep xxx' (where xxx is the PID which has set the lock).
It might be worth doing 'kill xxx' (as a su root command). Don't do that to PID 1.

Do you know that all running processes have directories (with lots of information) in the /proc directory?

I'll have a browse, but I would have to set up a couple of modems on my PABX again to test things out. I did it once.

Have you tried just using the GUI dialer? You can find it in KDE under Internet->Internet Dialer. It's got a very easy to follow wizard.

The gui dialer does the same thing. Just sits there.

I tried ps -aux and I found what was locking it. Here is the tail of my /var/log/messages file:
Apr 22 20:11:05 localhost pppd[1003]: Connect script failed
Apr 22 20:11:06 localhost pppd[1003]: Exit.
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS3 at 19200
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS3 at 19200
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost pppd[1023]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost pppd[1024]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost pppd[1023]: Device ttyS3 is locked by pid 1024
Apr 22 20:11:38 localhost pppd[1023]: Exit.
Apr 22 20:12:24 localhost pppd[1024]: Connect script failed
Apr 22 20:12:25 localhost pppd[1024]: Exit.

PID 1024 is /sbin/pppd -d. How do I fix that?
