View Full Version : Win2k Boots to blank desktop

My win 2k is not booting correctly every time the Pc starts you go through the boot process then only get the greygreen desktop background without any icons task bar or mouse pointer.

You can boot to safe mode and get a normal desktop. In device manager no HW problems are apparent. I have done a desk cleanup and I have tried a recovery from the Win2k install CD but the problem still persists.

I am not wanting to do a full reinstall of the OS and apps.

What should I try Next? any ideas would be appreciated

Have you installed new video card drivers recently?

Try this:

When system boots up press F8 and select the option of 'NORMAL', this should be the top most option.

Then when you see ('Press space to get original settings') or something, press SPACE BAR.

Select 'ORIGINAL SETTINGS' or the one you have in the list, press Enter.

This is similar to the System Restore Function in Windows ME and XP and should return your system to a previously good working state.

Sounds like an automatically launched application, or driver is hanging. You could try disabling startup items(sorri can't help with how to for win2k).
