iam running win98 ,i installed my modem on port 3 it works fine but i cant see port 3 listed in device manager tab in system properties there are only port 1 , 2 and ecp printer port (lpt1)

why cant i view it there

port3 is a virtual port. its shared with port1. you often find you can't connect anything to port1 due to it conflicting what you have installed on port3.

It is likely that you have Software (or Win Modem).

The modem driver emulates (or creates a fake port) which it uses.

This is very common, especially with modems with Conexant Chipsets.

You probably have a 'software modem' where part of the modem function is carried out by the CPU. Part of this software is a 'virtual port' that allows programs to communicate with the 'modem port', but in reality they are talking to the software that drives the modem. Hence you don't have a 'hardware' port 3.
