First - Thanks Robo for a great page. Have learned heaps just reading the questions then following up the answers.

I live in the country with telephone lines that have been around since the dinosaurs were lads, and I was wondering if there was some simple to use programme that would help me with downloads, picking up where I left off, when I get disconnected for the umpteenth time, that sort of thing. Thanks for any help, Iris

Go!Zilla or Getright.

Go!Zilla comes with spyware.

Both would do what you seek in resuming downloads though not all web sites support resumed downloading

flashget (also known as jetcar) is my favorite.

other good ones include getright and DAP(download accelerater).

there are heaps of very simple ones around but there not very good a doing split(multipart) downloading.

Try Download Express (http://www.metaproducts.com/mpDE-AY.html)

It's free and it doesn't have any advertising banners or spyware.

You must be using Internet Explorer to use it as it acts as a plugin. (200Kb in size)

Has all the usual features + 4 (configurable) speed modes so you can have it downloading in the background without taking much bandwidth so as you can continue surfing at a reasonable speed.

If you haven't got enough choices yet I think Download Accelerator Plus (often referred to as DAP) has fairly full download management features. I am not sure of its site address but it is a well known app and a search would find it.
