I am a newbie at PRESS F1 and I am only 13. I am having some dialup problems with dialing up my ISP in linux. I am trying to use minicom and Seyon because none of the others work. I have got as far as Dialing up -> Talking (squeeking) but then it just waits and times out. I have been trying to find a solution for this problem for over a year.

Thanks,
Simon

after you try and call out have a look in the main log to see if there are any errors.

the log you need is called 'messages'

it should be in /var/log

what i have done is watch it as i call out.

from a xterm enter this

tail -f /var/log/messages
this will print the system log as you go and will help.
also which distro are you running and what isp?

Well done, Simon. There's always more than one way to do anything, and you have got it working with Seyon and minicom.

Which distribution have you got ( RedHat, Mandrake, Corel, ...) and which GUI )KDE, Gnome)?

Obviously your modem works, so that's the silly stuff out of the way. What does the command 'ls -l /dev/modem' (in an xterm window) give?

Have you used the GUI connection setup tool?

I am using Redhat 7.1 but I don't have many features because I had to cram it all onto a 600 meg drive. I have tried Gnome's dialup program but that doesn't even dial.
