My pc has taken to loading a dos? programme called wininit.exe at startup. It is easily disposed of but what is wininit and why has it mysteriously appeared? Can I stop it from loading?

wininit.exe could be a trojan virus. For starters visit the link above minus the <> each end.

See if that helps, otherwise go to www.google.com and do a search for wininit.exe to bring up additional results.

If memory serves me right though, windows also uses a wininit file which comes in both ini and exe extensions.

My system- w95b - has two files. wininit.bak & wininit.exe - both in the windows folder. The exe file is dated 24/8/96 - bak 31/3/02. Don't know if this will help. Bye

Its part of a virus/trojan.

Go to one of the antivirus sites like symantec and do a search to find info on it.

Its one of those that requires registry editing to fix and there will be 2-5 other files to get rid of depending on the variant of virus/trojan it is.

You may have to delete a file or two in pure DOS as well - again depending on the variant of virus/trojan.
