View Full Version : Fixed the blue screen of death but what the heck is Still Image Monitor??

A few days ago I posted a query about the blue screen of death I was getting just as Windows 98 was finishing loading 'Error OE in VXD IOS etc etc'.
Well, I've solved that little nasty - last thing Windows was loading was a program in the Windows\System folder called 'Stimon.exe'.
Checking properties on this says it is Still Image Monitor and is a Microsoft application.
I couldn't find any reference to it in the Startup menu, win.ini or system.ini, so I thought I'd force Window's hand to tell me how it was being loaded by removing the exe file from the folder. Well, everything loaded up perfectly with no blue screen of death, but also no error message saying it couldn't find 'stimon.exe' as well!!

Typical MS.

So anyway, it's gone now. I have yet to see what effect this will have on any other apps, but at least I don't have the dreaded blue screen.

Anybody got any ideas as to what this program is or does?

This is a problem that Microsoft is well aware of, they have postings on this in their knowledge base. Briefly stimon.exe is used with USB devices like cameras and scanners.

Have a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257815

and:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q306393

There is also some info and a rather cumbersome fix at:

http://www.smatters.com/stimon/stimon_fix.html

To get the fix they want you to read a bit of their advertising for a program, but you click on Quick Overview to get it.
Cheers
