If cheap is what you seek look at the link above for the AVG homepage. AVG is free but you can upgrade and it does have free updates as well. Does email scanning as well.

For a paid version, Nortons AV could be a option, see somewhere like Dick Smith or any other computer supplier, price from about 99 to about 149 depending on where you get it, 2002 is the latest version and supports XP but 2001 is still available in places as well, both versions do email scanning. Free updates for a year and a small fee per year thereafter.

You will find comparison-testing articles in back numbers of some computer magazines, where several Ant-Virus programmes are evaluated.
Copies of some commercial Anti-virus software have appeared on magazine CD-R discs. Because the big market is in selling business network intrusion protection packages, some Home User versions of Anti-Virus programmes used to be available free, with the idea that it was good advertising and established a large user base for the company product. Products such as Norton Anti Virus or McAfee may retail for $100+, or involve an annual subscription fee, but they are not necessarily the best performers. I would suggest that you look at downloading one of two European Anti-Virus programmes, still available free to Home Users outside Europe. Grisoft AVG Free Edition is available at http://www.grisoft.com . Anti-Vir Personal Edition is available from http://www.free-av.com . Either of these will perform as well as the major brand-name products, provided that you download an update regularly.
