rebuilding an old pc.it has an early 586 motherboard with a 200mmx chip. when i switch on all that appears on the screen is the box pattern of the monitor and the power led light on the case, i'm lost, simple answer please, dick.

Not quite sure what you mean by the above like the box pattern of the monitor.

First of all try getting it to work is the main thing. Start off with the minimal stuff to get it working (video, keyboard etc)

Things to look at. Make sure the motherboard settings for the CPU is correct. Setting it too high will sometimes not work. Setting it low should though.

Check the RAM is seated properly or try removing some to have less RAM to try out.

Try reseating the graphics card.

Those are some of the problems when your left with a blank screen.
