View Full Version : Google Maps ... unwanted detail

Can anyone tell me if its possible to disable any unwanted detail from cluttering Google Maps? E.g. restaurants, schools, petrol stations, car yards etc ... in short to display only what I want - the basic street maps - and the locations I have saved?

I can't see any way to disable the unwanted display, but it's more than likely if there is, I'm looking in the wrong places.

Anybody please?

:)

Either another app or a add-on to strip out unwanted detail. Or look online for simple Google Map on a mash-up site(s). There is at least one about which I use to use...Or reviews of various mashups, e.g. at mashable com. Also if inclined you can make your own. I have made my own custom Google Map Mashups for my Auckland Hotel and Harbour cruise Blogs, from tutorials, e.g at Google Developer's com (https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/) using their java script API and their "key". Tutorial here (https://www.webucator.com/how-to/how-create-simple-google-maps-mashup.cfm) to create a simple Google Map. But...could be bit involved. It took me quite some time. Hopefully a simple map can be found online somewhere...

Thanks kahawai, but I think javascript may be beyond me somehow ... I may need to look elsewhere, other than Google

What web browser do you use? There are often extensions like greasemonkey or styler that you can use to hide elements.

If it's just to browse on your PC (rather than coding on y our own webpage), have a look at some of the styles here:
https://snazzymaps.com/style/151/ultra-light-with-labels

Using the example on this page, I just scrolled the map to NZ, and all that shows is suburbs and street names. No businesses, etc.
There's lots of other sample styles you could try too by browsing the style section.

I got around the problem meantime by using Bing Maps rather than Google Maps. Bing has far less detail and clutter and gave me the result I needed to work with. Thank you for your help anyway :)
