I have an old heavy laptop but I don't want to lug it around so I want to buy a Windows 10 tablet under $250 because I hardly go anywhere so I just need something with a USB 3 to plug in my Passport Hard Drive where all my data is at. Can anyone recommend something because I really don't know anything about tablets.

Any Windows tablet for that sort of price will be JUNK :-)
Even a good android tablet would cost more than that .

Heres one.

You would be much be off to buy a ultra portable (ie lightweight) laptop, if you want to do any real work on it.

I hope that USB HD isnt the only device with all your data . Make sure you have the data on 2 devices (or backed up to the cloud)

Junk? I have two laptops.Agrunty Toshiba which stays in my rest home room & this smaller Everis E2003 14" basic laptpop. I never got the hang of tablet so wnt for the Everis ther are 3 or 4 models. Sure it ony has internal 32GB SD memry but I have a 64GB SD Micro card in its slot, there are bigger cards also smaller laptop s, 11.6".
My Everis cost $299 at the Warehouse then droppd to $279 Now I believe it may be $215.(Naturally) In my mind this Everis made in Spain beats a tablet. PJ

I've not used the Everis laptop but I did test it out at warehouse stationery and must say the keyboard just felt right for typing in my opinion, better than the other laptops I tested. I was quite surprised by that. I think it was the feedback feeling I got from the keys and typing is what I need from my laptop rather than any of the other specs. I've been considering getting one of these laptops just for minor things that would be better done on the laptop rather than my phone. Especially be handy if I just want to write a bit of code while I am out and about. The small drive size isn't that much of an issue except it'll probably won't be suitable for me to try and compile code but I assume I could upgrade that.

I would find lugging around an external drive quite annoying, I find using cloud services or remoting home is better if it's mainly just documents and photos. If it's movies, then that'd be a different story but I assume I could stream them fine enough. Tablets with USB ports aren't really that common and a lot opt for OTG. Your hard drive will pull a lot of power and I probably won't recommend using it on a tablet just because power could be an issue and may affect the drive. If the cloud is not an option, maybe you can work with just syncing some of the files you need with your tablet and laptop, rather than carrying everything.

I'll stand by my claim that a $250 Win tablet(or laptop) will be junk .usually .

I'll stand by my claim that a $250 Win tablet(or laptop) will be junk .usually . I'll back you up on that remark 100%.

Most of the time they are cheap for a reason, usually underpowered, slow as a wet week, low on storage and generally bad quality components, continually give problems.

If there were two laptops sitting side by side, same manufacture (I'll make up these figures) ones at $300 and the other is $800-$1000 The main difference will be performance.

Most of those cheap ones have Celerons ( or similar AMD) wouldn't waster my time with them.

The No name brands -- you "may " be lucky and get one that works but don't expect to much from them.

With lower Priced units, 99% of the time they have a smaller screen as well. Seen it many times someone looks at the price only, get suckered in by the shop assistant or on line advertising, then once back home discover its hard to use (screen to small, text tiny) and they generally don't use it much because of that.

As 1101 posted earlier, you would be better off paying extra and getting a ultra portable, if weight it the problem, BUT expect to pay closer to $1000 + ( to start with) for anything decent and worth while. For a Standard laptop I'd say start at $800 +

I basically wont sell that cheap rubbish. Had a couple of customers ask, and I refused, suggested to them to get them elsewhere from places who don't care about selling junk, after buying they ring up to complain about it being slow, useless and can I upgrade it.

OLD STORY - Get what you pay for. ;)

Edited: if you were after a Tablet, this would be a reasonable STTARTING point at Harvey norman new-microsoft-surface-go-64gb.html (https://www.harveynorman.co.nz/computers/tablet-and-accessories/tablets/new-microsoft-surface-go-64gb.html) BUT as you will see way above the $250 stated. :( Would need a USB adapter for the external HDD.

Just out of curiosity seeing that I have got one. Why do you think cheap Everis is not a good buy ? pj You only have to look at reviews, Example: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=204262

The 14" from Warehouse -- The reviews ( at the bottom) https://www.warehousestationery.co.nz/product/W2299927.html

While yours may be OK for what you want and do, you also may be lucky.

If youre happy with it , then thats all that matters :)

Its a bit like a $5 watch.
May be just fine for what you want to do, but its still a $5 watch. I had a $5 watch , I know what would happen if I asked a watchmaker about it.
To sell a Win10 laptop for $279, something has to give.
