Sounds like a mechanical problem with the right mouse button to me. Have a look at your mouse model on Google and Youtube you may find repair suggestions there.

It is a Logitech mouse - and it was the button that was broken.

I installed my wife's mouse and everything is now working Honky Dorey.

Thanks for the great advice :)

What was the model number? I've just fixed my Logitech M310t. The button is actually a metal sheet divided into two. Each one makes L & R buttons. It was a case of using a thin knife blade to create a fulcrum and bending the offending metal leaf towards the base of the mouse to create a good contact. God knows how long it will be before I need to do it again!

The faulty mouse is a M505 :)
