View Full Version : RTL8812AU Is Still Bugging me!

This AM I had an impossible WiFi log-on occur.

Over 30 attempts to get online with my (now) world-(in)famous WSK RTL8812AU adapter had been met with zero results I had to get my ol' Alpha Unit out of the box again. (Infamous; a good word there)

I got my old Alpha Unit and plugged it into a front USB slot and once it was recognized by the machine and it was up-n-running, I then plugged my WSKY into the front slot right next to the Alpha Unit - then once it lit up and started twinkling, I pulled the Alpha Unit out of it's port.

Yeah - hot-swaps and hot jerk-outs! I'm living the dream now!

The WSKY is at present running in the FRONT USB slot - one and the same where I had a lot of trouble in the past - but right now it seems to operate pretty good.

Thinking here that I have some out-of-date or busted app downloads - I ran the following:

joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~ $ sudo apt-get install wicd

See that 'fail' up there? Is this my problem?

Let me run another command and see if it helps a little (or not):

joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~ $ lsusb

Bus 1 is the current home for the WSKY. When I had the Alpha Unit also in the front panel - in an emergent purpose just to get online - it too was reported in Bus 2, but I pulled it out when the WSKY started blinking normally.

This WSKY/Realtek - RTL8812AU driver inconsistency is well documented on many - if not all - websites and YouTube tutorials as being clumsy, inconsistent and somewhat irreverent to the user.

The reason I like it is for the speed I can get out of it. The Alpha is supposed to be the ultimate - but the WSKY outshines it - when it works, that is!

I just thought that I'd pass this little hint along ->

DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD WIFI ADAPTER/DONGLE! I MAY BE THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER THE OTHER APP/PROGRAM TO MAKE YOUR PREFERRED DEVICE WORK AGAIN!

I know that's just wrong on all levels - but that's the way it seems to work for me.

Does this look to you like I have many multiples of the same drivers or even bogus copies, over and over?

I am at a loss as to how to remove any code or apps as that hasn't been part of my training yet.

I'm just happy to be able to get something [I]INstalled.

and is this a problem? ........

Hey Joe,

What you see in dmesg affects the kernel, what I posted in my dmesg is all the messages I get for my USB WiFi adaptor, your one is going crazy with cfg80211 and RTL871x. Basically it's just detection, says my link is down, then is up and that's it, no more spamming the kernel.

This might mean you have too many drivers fighting for that one adaptor.

Show me what insmod displays and we may need to blacklist some drivers, be better if we could remove them but I feel if you're not too far into Mint, that a reinstall would be better, start clean and do it properly from the start. This was the reason I bought an adaptor with that chipset to see how difficult it'd be, but it worked without any issues.

In a previous post, I gave instructions on how to install the latest available drivers I could find but it means you need to have at least kernel 4.13 I think, although I got kernel 4.15 (latest available in Mint) working with those drivers fine.

I also only use network manager, not wicd.

Here's that post

I bought myself a rtl8812au WiFi adaptor, to see how easy it would be to install.

From Mint, their repo version is outdated, so that wasn't a good start, but I built it from the latest driver version I found on github and it worked fine for kernel 4.15, which is the latest at this moment for Mint.

The thing is you want to make sure you remove all old installs you may have done, so it won't conflict.

So the latest version I found 5.2.20, my instructions to install are:

git clone https://github.com/gordboy/rtl8812au.git
sudo cp -r rtl8812au /usr/src/rtl8812au-5.2.20
sudo dkms {add,build,install} -m rtl8812au -v 5.2.20

You may want to reboot at this stage.

I may package it but I don't want to maintain it, so rather not as it was really just to see how easy/difficult it would be to install.

I looked at your first dmesg properly this time.

You will benefit if you use an 80wire 40pin EIDE ribbon cable for your hard drive/cd ROM.

You had 2 wireless devices connected, your 8812au was first, then your 8711 which causes all those messages, I didn't see the rtl8812au get disconnected but it looks like it got knocked out the way then reappears, connecting on a different bus.

That 8711 spams a lot, it is possible that these wireless adaptors can interfere with each other but I can't see anything obvious in dmesg as I would have expected to see them disconnect.

Do you use NetworkManager? it will have it's own log to maybe suggest what the issue could have been with connecting.

Normally I would stop NetworkManager, unload the driver, load the driver then start NetworkManager and see if I can get the logs for it, I know it has a helper script to produce logs, but I'll have to post those commands when I'm home.

You may want to look at:

cat /var/log/syslog

Which may reveal some things dmesg hasn't reported.

From your install, again different kernels showing, if you update anything kernel related, linux-headers, etc, you'll need to rebuild your drivers again.

Hmmm.

I'm interested in the kernels that keep getting (what?) replaced? renewed? repaired? by (whom?) 'The Repository' or some other Linux system that keeps me fresh and current?

I know that the RTL8711 is my Alpha - and I guess it 'calls' out for a driver every time I have to use it to get online at all.

I usually take the Alpha out of it's front USB port and just leave the WSKY in one of the rear ports once it's up and blinking - telling me that it's communicating with the etherweb.

So - I can understand the plethora of drivers that are there for the USB adapters (both the Alpha and the WSKY) - but ultimately I want the WSKY to run the whole show without a wingman to 'help it along' at all.

Funny is that it (WSKY) started up and ran 100% by itself this morning - first time too! - but I know that's a fluke and may not repeat tomorrow or the next time I reboot again.

What - again - is the reason for all the kernel updates/changes? I don't want this instability every day or so.

I get notices that I need an update or two - or three or more -- many times a week and I am one to follow orders, especially from my computer - so I just 'OK' everything it tells me to do.

I guess that's wrong..... but let me run that command for you now:

One of the things I want to fix is that when I put the WSKY in a rear USB port - and then I click on 'Shut Down" - I get a reboot like I lost power and it's restarting again.

I have been to BIOS and unset and reset the "Do not restart after power failure" many times. I cannot get it to not be overridden.

I recall only a security reason for the kernel, kernel 4.13 was to address the spectre/meltdown issue. Normally kernels will not be updated.

But every time the kernel gets updated, you need to remove the old driver and build it again. if the driver source was created properly, you normally don't have to do this, the reason I don't make install and use dkms is for that reason, but I'll have to update my kernel to see if it works as intended.

Latest news...............

I have updated one thing at a time - maybe not hit the one that screws the system up yet - but after three updates of apps, I'm still running OK.

It boots first time at cold start and restart too. What else can I ask for?

Still wondering about the hdd cables - but I'm slowly chewing my way through the things you told me to do and so far it's all good.

The failure to stay off is another problem - but i can wait for that for a while - it's not too bad really.

Right now I'm trying to figger how to cool the insides of a 32" Sharp flat screen TV that I use for a monitor.

It thermals-out after the screen goes brighter and then just codes out to - 2 blink - pause - 2 blink - pause --- which is trouble in the temperature according to their idiot website.

Right now I taped a muffin fan to it - but I'm seriously thinking about running it without the rear cover! Just gotta remember to keep fingers out of the caps!!

The muffing pumps air in, but there's no place it comes out. There's a plethora of louvers, but they are all dead ends.

Stupid engineers who divide the circuits and wall them off, needing to get some --- ANY ---> air and they are in a closed cell to cook and overheat.

Other then that - a Sharp TV is a piece of penguin poop. Know what I mean?
