I am the secretary of a club with several Categories of membership. (A,B,C etc) I have the member's names listed in alphabetical order on one spreadsheet and want these to automatically transfer to another sheet separated under their various categories. This can be done with the 'if' function (ie =if(sheet1a1='A',b1,0)- b1 being the members name and A1 the category of membership. However this means that there will be gaps in the list because of the predermined position. Is there a function that will eliminate the gaps?

You could do it manually by using Data/Filter/AutoFilter on the list categories then copying the results to the appropriate place.
A function won't do this - but a macro could.

I'm not sure whether there is an automatic way of removing blank rows but the quickest manual way would be to do a sort on the new info which will put all the blank lines together - quicker to delete in one group.
