Hope there's asimple answer to this one. Everytime I start my computer the floppy disk drive searches for something. It sounds like machine gun fire for about 5 seconds. It started doing it a couple of months ago. everything else works fine

...this may or may not remove your annoying sound, but it will reduce your Startup and Reboot time.

Open your System Properties Panel [either from Control Panel - or hold down the WIN Key + Pause/Break] and go Performance Tab > File System > Floppy Disc > and uncheck (disable) the setting named 'Search for new floppy disc drives each time your computer starts' > click Apply/Okay.

NOTE: in the event of a system failure - you will *still* be able to boot your system from an emergency disc.

I hope this resolves your annoyance.

Cheers!!!

If it's happening when you first turn it on then go into your bios setup. Usually by tapping [Delete] or [F1] when you power up the machine. Then turn off 'floppy seek at boot up' (it may be labeled different by similar) The option is usually found under bios features.
