I downloaded a pdf copy of my HD manual. Is there any choice of sites I can use to install and print the manual or am I stuck with Adobe Acrobat?

You could install Linux, and use the acrobat viewer in the Gnome GUI (and probably with KDF).

But it's not as good as Acrobat Reader.

Why not install Acrobat Reader? It's free. Most computer magazine cover CDs have it, so you don't even need to download it.

pdf files are created with Adobe products - programs such as Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Exchange. Therefore you need an Adobe product to read them. To give the program universal appeal Adobe Acrobat Reader was produced and is available for free.

I think the question you are asking is 'are there alternatives to pdf files?'

That entirely depends on the person who provided the file. It's much easier (and a LOT cheaper time wise) to take a written manual and zap it into pdf format than to convert it to html. There are also big advantanges in that all formatting remains the same as the original.
