Hi All.
Am I right in thinking that a 512GB SSD holds the same amount of data as a 1TG Optical normal Hard drive? Thanks. PJ

512 GB is 512 GB...regardless of whether it's an SSD, a normal Harddrive, or an SD card or USB.

Nope. 512Gb SSD is the same as a 512Gb normal drive - closer enough to anyway.

So is 1TB SSD? PJ

You seem to be confusing a few terms here. The measure of a drives storage capacity is rated in gigabytes or terabytes typically (GB, TB). This has nothing to do with the type of hard drive or it's speed and is purely a measure of storage space. It is the same for all forms of storage.

TG I assume is a typo for TB

Optical refers to CD, DVD, or Blu-ray And is not normally used when referring to hard drivesHDD can refer to any type of hard drive but normally is used to refer to conventional mechanical drives.

SSD refers to solid state drives, they are faster than conventional drives but more expensive for the same capacity. They are not available in large capacities commonly yet but you can buy them in capacities up to 2 TB for the home market.

For economical reasons most people use a smaller SSD in the 120 - 512 GB range as a boot drive and a larger 1TB + mechanical drive for storage. You can however definitely buy both types at the 1TB capacity.

:)

1TB = 1000GB , so it holds the same data as two 512GB HDs (approx)

if you need 1TB, then get a 256Gb SSD & a old school 1TB Hard Drive . Use the 1TB HD as a 2nd HD for storage (photos movies etc) & the SSD as the bootable WIn drive

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks. PJ
