View Full Version : Windows Explorer crashing on 1 Folder!

28-05-2016, 11:07 AM
Am having trouble with Windows Explorer crashing on just one folder. Am using that folder to download a heap of movies from a family member via a BitTorrent programme and so far have grabbed about 200GB. The movies are all his DVDs.
Ran System File Checker and got the message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".
Have stopped the download, rebooted but not joy!
Any suggestions?

Move some of them. See if it stops crashing

Look in event viewer it may tell you what's causing it

Doing some reading on Dr Google, this can be caused if you have thumbnail View in the folder so change the view options, it can happen if the thumbnail database is corrupted.

If they work OK in another view, reset the thumbnail cache http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10797-thumbnail-cache-clear-reset.html

It can also be caused by invalid characters in the file names (had that happen many times on customers computers) Windows by default wont allow certain characters in a Name.

Form Microsoft : "Windows Explorer crashes are mostly caused by an incompatible Shell Extension/Codec Pack"

Yeah windows attempts to preview a pane of the Video file using your registered codecs and can have issues. One of the reasons I don't use codec packs or thumbnail views of videos.
Sometimes even hovering over one for a second can cause freezes or crashes. Moving them a few at a time as speedy suggests is a good Idea, assuming it's not too painful of a crash fest.

Incidentally even if we believe it's the DVD rips of a family member which is pushing credibility more than a little, it's still not legal for you to have copies of them so if you were trying to avoid telling us you illegally download movies you failed.
If they want to give you the movies they have to give you the original Disk and delete any copies. Anything else is pretty much the definition of movie piracy. Delete the folder and take a portable hard drive around to your family members house (not that I'm buying that for a second) and copy them into a few different folders. At least that way most of them should work.

Hi Speedy and thanks - shifted about 80GB to another PC - took about 2 hours and was doing that when you posted.
Why do you think that fixed it?!

It may fix it, but what WT said may also cause it. Invalid names. Invalid characters in the filenames

Explorer.exe can also crash (but I dont think this is your prob) if something isnt compatible, or something is buggy (like codecs), if you installed any

And programs that add options to the right mouse mouse button / context menu can also crash it
