Is MS still doing updates for win7?
I have just installed it on a old Compaq.
It's going ok, but thought I'd update it anyway.
Been searching for over an hour so far.

Yes they are.

Often its downloading in the background. Usually I just go restart, and sometimes updates will be sitting there ready to install. Once the first lot go in the others work as before.

Also just remembered: sometimes a newer installer will work. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

OR

Run the trouble shooter https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us

Thanks, SP1 was in the ISO.
Just working through the MS support stuff now.

May have to come back to it later.
Need to get out & stretch my legs.

Only thing that wont get updated, will be IE. MS will no longer be supporting IE 8,9,10 after the 12th Jan (the next patch Tuesday). That's if they use IE

IE11 will still get updates though.

Not really gaining any ground with this.

Bit of history on this system.

Compaq nx5000
Pentium M 1.6Ghz
1GB Ram
60GB HD
About 2004 vintage.
Came out with XP originally

Actually runs quite well with win7, thought it might be a slug.
Everything runs ok but there is now, no sleep function. So it has to be shut down when not in use.
Ok so far but each time it starts it reloads the graphics drivers.
I was hoping a update may sort this out.

So from info gained from the links in post three:

I installed Windows update agent.
Then ran Windows Automated Trouble shooter.
That did a lot of checking, resolving, detecting, collecting & finally resolved a list of things.

But we still cant find any updates.
The only one showing in the installed list is KB976902.
I am assuming the trouble shooter installed this one.

I have set updates to auto & it's currently checking for updates atm.

Sorry meant to add, got the drivers from this site

Wouldn't touch any of those places for drivers. ALWAYS look at the manufactures site first. Never know what sort of "extras" you may get.

From the HP site - Which they claim

Some of the hardware in your notebook cannot run windows 7 which is why there are no drivers for it.

I would try manually installing the XP drivers from your notebook's support and driver pages for the drivers that W7 didn't install such as the graphics and audio.

Looks like it maybe too old for Win7 http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/HP-Compaq-NX5000-Win7-drivers/td-p/4889319

I went through all that when I put vista on it.
From memory it didn't want any of the xp drivers.
It found suitable drivers through ms update.
Thats why I was hoping it might do the same for win7.
After the install it was only audio & usb that wernt there.
I used the drivers from that site & fixed that.
I tried the graphics driver because it was there, but can't be compatable.
I'll try getting rid of it.

Go to the device in device manager, details tab. change it to hardware ids. Copy and paste whats there in here. It doesnt matter what manufacturer site you get the driver from, it should work, if its for win7 32 bit. Just dont get the driver from any site

Those are the intel graphic drivers:

Which according to Intel are not available for W7

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18576/Older-Intel-Graphics-Controllers-and-Microsoft-Windows-7-

You can Try the driver from HERE (http://global-download.gateway.com/GDFiles/Driver/VGA/VGA_Intel_6.14.10.3722_XPx86XPx64_A.zip?acerid=634 152805223625860&Step1=&Step2=&Step3=B-330&OS=X05&LC=en&BC=Gateway&SC=) - Direct download. Extract the package to a folder, then right click the problem driver in devie manager, and update driver - point at the folder. if the right one is there it will auto install. ( dont run the setup.exe)

You can also try running the driver updater /locator from Intel - may or may not find the correct one. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

We can put this one to bed too, thanks for the help guys.
Going to put vista back on it.
Only gets used for storing recipes & browsing anyway.

Might I suggest installing a light version of Linux on it instead? Xubuntu 12.04 or even 14.04 would run just fine on that hardware.

Get 12.04 here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/12.04/release/xubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

Get 14.04 here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/14.04/release/xubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-i386.iso

Thanks Rod.
I am familiar with Linux, have it double booted on another system here atm.
Actually had mint running on this old system for a while.

Have just finished reinstallation of Vista on this old system.
Didn't need any drivers.
After a few updates everything works.
However, activation wouldn't work.
Didn't like my key.
Had to ring MS.
Struggled to understand the guy.
He didn't like the key either, said it was invalid, I would have to contact my retailer.
I asked if you could still buy Vista in India because you'd be lucky to find a new copy in NZ.
He then said to contact MS support, isn't that you, says I.
There was a pause, then another dood came on & talked me through the validation.
I was getting a bit concerned they weren't going to do it.
