Registry change enables XP Updates.

A single registry setting makes Windows Update think your XP system is Windows XP POSReady, which will receive updates for another five years.
This simple registry change to a Windows XP system tricks Windows Update into providing updates for it.

The change, included just below, will enable continued updates until April 9, 2019. To apply it, create a text file with a .reg extension and the contents below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

Run it by double-clicking in Windows Explorer. After this is done, if you run Windows Update, it will find several new updates: [Screen capture deleted]. This works only on 32-bit systems, 64-bit is coming soon.

Cheers

With this trick you're installing updates designed for a different OS. How is this a good idea? :illogical

So's Server 2003, but I wouldn't install updates for that on XP either...

Yeah this idea sounds pretty damn suss. But hey, I'm sure this has been argued over time and again... why update? Just leave your XP o/s machine off the Internet and use it only for fun and games and apps.

On the other hand, my older XP desktop will never be connected to my other machines, so a bit of a play at risk could be fun. :D

Tried this hack on a Win XP PC at work. Amazing what new updates appeared like .NET etc. Seemed to have no averse reaction to the PC. Will watch it for another week..
