Hello again.

I haven't yet learned to move & copy files & folders etc. For instance. I have a "News" icon on the desktop to which I want to place selected News programmes. BBC, Herald, Google News, etc.
With google I can open the news & read ok. When I click on it I get...Copy Link...Open Link...Open in Browser. I don't see a "Send To" box or Shortcut anywhere.
What am I not doing? Thanks.

W8 is SOOOO different to XP. I will get there..........Wont I? Incidentally when did XP come on the market? I think I got it 6 months after it came out. Very slow as I only had 265 MB of ram on the mb. Then up to 1GB & it ran ok. PJ

So you want to create a shortcut to a website on your desktop?

And as for the second question, 2001. ;)

Yes, to put them there individually then group them under one icon. I could do it easily with XP but haven't worked out how on W8 yet. PJ

2001...Thanks. PJ

Same way as on XP - right-click desktop, New -> Shortcut, type in the address (with http:// etc) and finish. :)

Unfortunately that is what is not happening. PJ

I've just tried the method pcuser42 mentioned and it works for me on Win8.1

Alternatively, in the browser next to the address bar, to the left of the http:// part there will be a little favicon of the website, you can just drag that to the desktop.

Works for me.

You can also drag the site icon (to left of www.etc) to the desktop.

Clearly I am missing something or doing something wrong.

So I click onto the desktop screen, empty space & goto Select Shortcut. Next I get 'What item would you like to create a shortcut for? Type in the location of the item or browse. What does this mean?

On the desktop is an Icon called News. This is where I want to place my popular news programmes.

Click onto large Icon screen & select Google Open it & search for Google news. I get Google News NZ & news.google.co.nz. Open the news. Click on page & NO Shoertcut or Sendto boxes. All I can get is...Copy Link...Open Link...Open in Browser. So I open the news ling & get the news. Still NO http link etc. No dropdown box to move things around.

Am I missing a setting or something? Please put me out of my misery. Thanks. PJ

What item would you like to create a shortcut for? Type in the location of the item or browse.'

The item you're browsing is a website, so in that feild you type in www.trademe.co.nz or what ever, in the next screen type in the name you want the link to have ie TradeMe.

Lets stay with Google News. What location do I type in, http, if it is not showing. Browse? That shows things that are already on this computer. PJ

So I google google news & get it on screen. Hihglighted under the name is ...news.google.co.nz. I assume this is the URL/link/address? So I highlight it in an attempt to copy & paste but then it opens the news page. On the Desktop if I select Shortcut is ....news.google.co.nz...What I put into the URL box? PJ

Yup if you want it on the desktop right mouse / new shortcut. Where it says type the location of the item, type in news.google.co.nz then next, give it a name, click on finish thats it. Its a shortcut to Google news

You type the url in where it says type the location of the item

If you know the url you dont have to copy and paste from a browser, just type it in after you create a shortcut for whatever site on the desktop
