will a network card work better than on-board lan
if so, which card would provide the best performance for a business on POS

A gigabit pci-e adapter will work better than an onboard 10base-2 adapter on a gigabit LAN.... not enough info to give you the answer you're probably expecting. If both are gigabit, there will be little to no difference unless there is a fault with one of the devices.

Wasn't 10base2 coax based? Don't think there would have been too many onboard versions of that...

Yep and 10Mbps only. everything after that is twisted pair, BaseT (10BaseT, 100BaseT and 1000BaseT)
