Great reply to my GMail query, perhaps I will be lucky with this one tooo!.

Windows Explorer has that awful screen come up that states that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem as must close.

Dr. Google gave an answer from one of the clues and the dllcache file was copied from the Restore partition, and this worked once and and quickly reverted back to the problem window.

An answer to this would also be appreciated.

How long have you had this problem?
If the problem has occurred since update Tuesday, I would do a system restore to prior to April 8th and see how you get on.
But...
There are better qualified people on this forum.

Hi Speedy, will get to you yet !!!.

Have tried the System Restore over several dates and always get the "Restoration Incomplete" screen every time.

There is a System Restore on the start-up flash screen, but have never thought to use this one, it might be of a different sequence of events and fatal in my hands, lol.

Only programs installed have been LibreOffice, Opera, McAfee Security and Kerio from the external drive.

Have tried to get rid of MSSE all together but have only blocked the auto update, the alert screen tells me that Avira virus is up to date, installed yesterday.

Getting to like wife's W7 more every day rofl.

First thing remove ALL the antivirus programs, often if you two or more they will fight one another causing all sorts of problems.

Once all removed, open a command prompt as admin (right-click "command prompt" - run as administrator) type in sfc /scannow <press enter> Let it scan, if it finds anything and fixes or replaces them - good, have your wndows DVD handy ( unless its a name brand computer/install)as it may ask to the DVD.

Once thats done, type chkdsk /r <then press enter> you will get a message saying it cannot perform the operation and ask you if you want to schedule it at the next reboot. Type Y, then type Exit, reboot the computer, chkdsk will run on next boot (or should).
Try it without any AV installed first, then assuming its OK put back 1 ONLY.

Wai, have removed Avira, McAfee, Kerio. Also Opera.

Run both sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r nothing showing on these.

OS is XP SP 3

Ok, open eventvwr by clicking start / Run type in eventvwr - once open look under system - where explorer crashed, hopefully there will be an entry ( error) double click it to open, in the description will hopefully be a message giving some clue as to what happened. Post back what it says ( fully). Not one of MS's helpful ones " explorer crashed" No kidding

Failing that since the other two system checks didn't find anything & by the sounds of it System restore is also damaged you "may" need to do a repair install on XP (second last resort).

Wai, thanks for that.

OMG, eventvwr whew, plenty of meat in that file !, but nothing on explorer, mostly other abbreviations and Service Control Manager.

Noticed that IE has been scrubbed clean off this pc, wtf !, tried downloading IE8 for XP which I think was the ver. on board, but it won't load either.

Our usual pcguru has shifted from nearby way across to the WEST, where it's safe. Me thinks we will have to leap-frog over wife and upgrade to W8.1, no bells and whistles tho.

Ps. The System Restore under the Dos flash screen would be too lethal for me to work through.

Noticed that IE has been scrubbed clean off this pc, wtf That wouldn't be helping, IE is used for several other components in Windows, so while it may not be used, if its removed it can cause problems.

Try putting it back Via XP -- Have a read of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307894 Look for IE in the list, you will get all sorts of warning but removing then reinstalling may fix it.
