View Full Version : Internet Browsers not opening after running AdwCleaner

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

So basically, I had some extensions repeatedly installing themselves on both Firefox & Chrome, so I ran AdwCleaner. It seemed to successfully detect the files to delete, so I pressed clean and allowed the program to restart the computer. However on startup, neither Firefox or Chrome would start. I checked task manager and both programs' processes appeared when I launched the programs but then subsequently disappeared after a few seconds. The funny thing however is that Internet Explorer still functions correctly (I had to re-enable it in Programs & Features haha).
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

If IE works run that and download ccleaner, (http://www.ccleaner.com). Click on advanced so you wont install 3rd party programs. Then go to tools / startup. If the entry for whatever addon is here disable it. Or go to the FF or chrome tab.

Disable it here.

Then once FF or Chrome works go to addons and remove it

Problem Solved, ran multiple 'problem checking' software including 'Security Check', 'Farbar Service Scanner', 'MiniToolBox' & 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware'

I'm not quite sure what was causing the problem, but Malwarebytes picked up dll files called 'WebPlat.dll' and 'WebPlatSvc.dll' and also something in the registry called 'PUP.Optional.GreatSaver.A' so either of those may have been causing the problem.

Looks like Greatsaver.A is a browser Highjacker and crapware

Might pay to do a few more checks with the other Removal Tools to see if any more is lurking

Run all those programs. Make sure you do FULL scans when some of the programs have that option, quick scans often miss things. It will take a while.
