Hi there.
We have been plagued by very high (for us) inexplicable internet use. We thought might be wifi hacking so I have: changed password often (to complex stuff), hidden SSID, put on a MAC filter to only allow few devices. Not that. Have realised how huge some of the automatic updates are and set to manual updates only. Not that (partial fix).
Tried turning off wifi entirely. Still getting overnight use, when all devices are OFF, shutdown (including PC). May start at 3 in morning (no one is up), for example - no pattern. Just recently installed Bitmeter onto PC. Shows that at times there is huge internet usage (1.5GB/hour - we are on 10GB/month plan) even when not connected to the internet (but modem is on).
Found this: turn modem off, no usage. Turn modem on, huge usage. Unplug computer to modem cable, no usage. Plug back in, no usage. But then if modem is switched off and on again (or at any given random time) usage climbs again.
Have run a virus scan with Bitdefender and Malwarebites - nothing.
Can anyone tell me what's up?? :waughh::confused:

Well I wouldn't use MAC addresses, theyre easy to figure out. I doubt anything would use the wifi if its off. If it has been on and something is downloading overnight, yup, disable automatic updates. Check the other programs that are installed (in their options). Some have options to download updates etc overnight (like 2-3 am).

Post a hijackthis log. So, we can see whats on the system

Have you tracked it down to an individual machine? Does it have any software that might be updating itself such as games or large programs?
If you open task manager and go to the network tab can you see what's using the bandwidth from there ?

Any kids/ teens have access to the computer, have you checked for file sharing programs like uTorrent? (by default it autoruns on startup and seeds any downloaded files). If it's really happening when nothing is connected you may want to have a chat to your ISP as that shouldn't happen. Hacked Wi-Fi is actually pretty uncommon what happens more often is people using unsecured networks which you seem to have eliminated.

These things are very often;
A) Normal updates that just happen to be larger than usual
B) A family member intentionally or otherwise using more bandwidth than they admit to - much more common than many people believe
C) Malware
D) hackers -not that likely but possible

If the PC is on, then you are connected to the internet, allways .
Turn OFF all the PC's laptops, phones, PS3/XBOX etc but leave one on: do this to find the problem device.

There will be something running in the background you dont know about. eg: online backups, Torrents/P2P/filesharing, malware/viruses etc

Well I wouldn't use MAC addresses, theyre easy to figure out.

Maybe easy for some but not for most. It's still worth using MAC address filtering.

But WiFi can be compromised by more than lame passwords. WEP is useless, and WPS has some flaws too. You need to disable WPS, and use WPA2 with AES for a start.

Yep. That's what we are using. Thanks.

Yes. Tracked to PC. Turn modem on and you get sudden, huge usage (yellow colour on bitmeter - not sure what that means, but it usually isn't). Unplug computer (modem still on) usage drops (except for wireless use). Plug computer back in and it's all okay again. Just did it now, again. No teens/other users. Seems like an update or something trying to connect, but big big data use. 20GB over a 7-8 hour period, without browser open. Only on PC. I am sure it has happened while the computer is OFF as well. I know that seems ridiculous. No uTorrent stuff (deliberately). Malware not detected.
Just looking at Task Manager now while usage went nuts - how do I see what is causing it?

Well I wouldn't use MAC addresses, theyre easy to figure out. I doubt anything would use the wifi if its off. If it has been on and something is downloading overnight, yup, disable automatic updates. Check the other programs that are installed (in their options). Some have options to download updates etc overnight (like 2-3 am).

Post a hijackthis log. So, we can see whats on the system

I though I did this already, sorry if I did:

You can find out what is using your network in "Performance Monitor" under the Network tab if you have Vista or higher.

Otherwise, Sysinternals TCPView should tell you http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Try installing a firewall and setting permissions to block internet access to everything except what you allow yourself. That will tell you what is gaining access.

Geez there's a lot in that HJT log lol. Doesn't Chrome update / or check for updates often?
