My son borrowed my photo archive expansion drive and formatted it on an Xbox360. Can I get my files back?

How valuable are these files to you? If the answer is "very" or similar, take it to a professional recovery group like Computer Forensics (http://www.datarecovery.co.nz/datarecovery.html) - but it will typically cost somewhere north of $500 if they can do it. If the answer is "I could take it or leave it", you can try running something like Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva) on the drive yourself. The main thing in any data recovery situation is to not write anything to the drive until recovery is complete, as it will reduce the chance of successful recovery.

Time for a new son!

If he's writtin 40GB of game files onto it you'll have likely lost a lot of the original files.

Without spending significant money your files are likely to be history.

While on the subject, keeping anything on only a single backup drive is trouble, as drives can and will abruptly die and take the whole lot into digital oblivion. You need 2 more drives for your precious stuff, and leave the son with the Xbox expansion that he's already messed with.

Hi, thanks to all contributors - I used Recuva and got a lot of my photos back - maybe half or more. I also did a Recuva run looking for movie files but none of the 12 or so movies were recovered. Likewise with documents, nothing useful. Thanks again.
