Hi,
I am building a new PC, mostly for gaming and normal emails/web surfing etc. I chose the GTX 660 ti but after reading some comparisons, I change to the 7850.
Which is the best model/brand to get?
It's fairly urgent.
Thanks

Asus or Gigabyte, Gigabyte seem to be cheaper in NZ so probably pick one of those.
something like https://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=16414 which has a nice OC and is still cheaper than the Asus standard clocked model.

Of course if you had another $150 to spend you could get https://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=19798 which would be better, but that's a big price hike also.
And then at the mid point https://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=16415 which is pretty close to the 760 and still $110 cheaper.

Myself I prefer Nvidia for the consistency in game performance I've experienced, but with that big of a price difference I'd be tempted to go AMD also and they are great cards.

My motherboard is crossfire compatible only and Nvidia is quite a bit more expensive.

Asus or Gigabyte

+1

Both have a 3 yr warranty. I prefer ASUS, but have bought Gigabyte for price.

Sapphire don't have the reputation for reliability of the others, they are cheaper for a reason. That said my current card is a sapphire I got for the price and it's been great so far, it's a gamble.
I prefer Asus also, but Gigabyte is a very good brand and cheaper - which is why I recommended them.

The question was best brand, it may be Asus, it may be Gigabyte, it's not Sapphire.

Just like motherboards, buy a decent brand. Cheap video cards use cheap components like crap capacitors and fans.

For the $50 difference, the 660Ti is considerably faster than the 7850!

Check out this. Seems like the 7850 is the winner.
I went with Gigabyte 1GB one. Seems pretty good and I can always add a second one.

Thanks for all the responses!

660ti beats the 7850 in the linked benchmarks... Oh well, the 7850 is still a great card.

They do declare the 7850 the winner - but based on value not performance. And given that we are in a different country with different prices it's not as relevant.
I'm sure the 7850 will do a great job and it is a good price, as mentioned previously though the 660Ti has more performance for it's extra price.

When I'm comparing I use the monthly "Best graphics cards for the money" article on Toms hardware. I read through it but ignore the pricing and then use the chart to write local prices on and find a winner.
Here's this months chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html Note the 660Ti is one tier higher than the 7850, Toms say to notice a real difference with an upgrade you need to go 3 tiers.
It's not the only benchmark site around, but it's consistent and I've come to rely on it. If I'm struggling to decide between two cards I'll check out some other sites.

7850 Crossfire sounds REALLY good. :D

Strangely, not many people report micro-stuttering.

I dont think the smaller chips 78xx, suffer the micro-stutter as badly as the 79xx cips do, their is supposed to be fixed drivers released tomorrow, however havent seen anything in the pipe yet...I doubt they will fix it completely with a software fix.....
