Can you provide me (a newbie at computing)with a comprehensive maintenance programme to clean up unwanted data/files, to completely irradicate specific data completely from machine ie if sold etc and general maintenance to speed machine up? I am paticularly interested to build my knowledge why's and wherefores of a manual method. I don't mind a single maintenance programme for future use after I am familiar with knowing what is happening.

To maintain your system consider doing based on how much use you do with it, a thorough scandisk and defrag say every 2 to 4 weeks, this in itself will help you compute. As for unwanted files, you can remove all the contents of the Windows Cookie Folder and Windows Internet Temp. As for your Windows Temp folder, basically if the extension ends in tmp they can be removed as well. A good program for removing these files and other rubbish would be Window Washer though there are others. As for removing data from your system if you want to sell, reformat is one way but it can be recovered by another person, if what you have is very personal or business related, for a few dollars a program called BCWipe will do that to DoD standard of 7 wips or more if required which would be difficult to recover if at all. PGP also has a wipe feature and is free whereas BCWipe is not free.

A couple of good programs to use are:

Easycleaner from http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm

Regcleaner from http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Eraser from http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/

Hello kate.
If you want to erase data off your Hard-Drive so others cannot retrieve it then the FREE (yes FREE) Sure Delete program version 5.0.3 is for you. It works with Windows 95. Windows NT. Windows 98. Windows 2000. Windows ME.

You said you were a newbie so I'll explain how to go to the web site.

Left click this link below (beginning with http) to select it (turns blue) and then right click your mouse and select copy. Open your browser and then right click again in the address bar and select Paste. Then press enter (or GO on the address bar.) This will take you to the appropriate site.

http://www.rocketdownload.com/Details/File/suredelete.htm

Once at the site, just click where it says DOWNLOAD NOW! on the left hand side, to begin the download process.

When the sure delete program has downloaded, just click on the program icon to begin the installation process.

This program is safe and reliable. Just follow the instructions to 'wipe' the free space which will stop your already deleted data from being retrieved.

Regards Tony.
