My motherboard of the variety I have stated above, says it can handle 256MB 64bit RAM or 512MB 128bit RAM. What does this mean? In most RAM descriptions it does not state whether the RAM is 64 or 128 bit. Can I put 512MB of 64bit RAM in and vice versa? What effects would this have?

The motherboard has a fixed number of address lines which operate the memory.

64 bit wide memory is 8 bytes wide, 128 bit memory is 16 bytes wide so the least significant address line works either 8 or 16 bytes at a time.

If you plug in 512 MB of 64 bit memory, your board will actually use only 256 MB of it. It won't damage the rest; it just can't use it. If you plug in 256MB of 128 bit memory, it will address 256 MB.
