"WSAstartup() failed, or you have the incorrect version of WinSock installed" I get this message whenever I try to download a torrent. I wonder if anyone is familiar with the problem and knows a remedy?

Open a command prompt as admin if you're using Vista +. Then type netsh winsock reset. Then type exit, then reboot. Then see if it works

Speedy, many thanks for the suggestion which I'm afraid left me no further forward. I note that you mention Vista -- I should have noted that I am running Windows 7. I ran the Cmd as administrator, types in the phrase you suggested and it reported that the Winsock catalogue had been reset, rebooted, but found the same problem.

See if the 2nd post helps (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/resettingrepairingreinstalling-winsock2-testing/aa044f6b-00e2-406b-8edb-cba5c4799cf2)

I would say Winsock 2 is corrupt
