My sisters looking for a laptop for university. She want's something smaller than my laptop (15.6in) but bigger than my parents tablet (10in). I'm thinking around 13.3. Being the fussy thing she is :D - Windows 7 not 8 if at all possible, and computer + MS Office 2013 for under $1100. Any ideas?

The other good ones are like Thinkpad T series for the 13" size.
For the Office - you can get it via a MS download link which you use your uni email address to auth. yourself to get the tertiary price deal, need to burn yourself that EXE file on CD though. Likely to be cheaper than the Home/Office edition.

Thanks, I'll show those to her. Not too sure if she'll be comfortable buying from an online store, worth a shot though.

I've bought from PC Online Shop (and XP Computers) heaps - never any issues - never had to return anything yet though.....

Ok, thanks. Think the HP will be pushing her budget a little, but the VIO is good - will take here to a store and see whether 13.3 or 14inch laptops are 'better'.

She should be able to get office cheap being a student best student deal (http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msnz/en_NZ/pdp/productID.260471000) and so much better than buying home and school versions from a shop or office starter

Office 365, a subscription based one. Nope :) Home and student 2013.

Could be a better deal if you will be wanting to install on more than one device or to upgrade after 4 years as the packaging for this says I user - 2 PC's - 4 year subscription.

At least with Home and Student you own it forever - no more payments. There are still people and organisations using Office XP and 2003 so a 4 year sub wouldn't work for them.

Didn't uni students used to be able to get a copy of Office Pro Academic for under $100? Have they retired that in favour of 365?

Well, she ended up buying this - http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/computers/notebook-computers/pc-notebook-computers/toshiba-p840-019-14-touchscreen-notebook/prod120932.html#specs-tab - running Windows 8 but she decided she could live with that.

8's actually pretty nice, there's some stupid design flaws but once you get used to them they aren't deal breakers.

Yea, I stuck a start menu on it, showed her the basic way to navigate metro, and left her to it. She seems to like running the desktop split with the mail app...gotta say it, I do quite like that mail app as well!
