If it's just .NET try downloading it directly from Microsoft. You may have to uninstall your existing version also.

If no updates are happening check the date settings, microsoft don't allow updating for people living in the past or future.

Those files can be a pain to install. Because they can corrupt themselves. Or wont work, (or updates wont install) if the previous installs were installed in the wrong order. Look in C:\windows\softwaredistribution folder. Open the reportingevents txt file. Copy and paste some of the lines at the bottom. That'll usually tell you the reason and what the error is

Sorry speedy I can't copy and paste as when I highlight the part I want it just zooms over to the left of the page which is the total history of all downlaods. Anyway, the last few lines show the error KB982524. When I go to the Microsoft site to get the updates it tells me I cannot view the page until I download an ActiveX control . How do I get that?

They are enabled as directed above speedy but when I go to the Microsoft update site and scan for updates it gives the message that I need to install an activeX control and the recommended instruction is to go to the information bar and selct install active x control. When I do this there is no option to install it

tried every suggestion in gotommygo - still won't update them and i can't do them manually as the micorosft site tells me I need an ActiveX Control and says to right click the information bar but when I do I am not given that option

May be not an issue but I have often that the firewall is blocking it.

So I turn off av and firewalls and then it usually goes through easily.

The same with MSE updates.

BITS was disabled under msconfig. That'll be a reason why it didnt work. Its working now, activex installed. The only prob now is, it looks like the net files , or some part of (one of the installs) is corrupt. So, will use the cleanup tool. And reinstall all of them again

Right looks like its finally fixed. :clapAs above BITS was disabled. After ticking it and rebooting windowsupdate worked, so did activex. Had to use the net framework cleanup tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx), to remove all net files then reinstalled them

Looks like the windows installer was also corrupt / kaputt. Because this error came up - This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.

After downloading this (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483) 2 net framework 3.5 updates that failed before installed. And so did the defs for MSE

Only thing I have to figure out now why MSE says it needs to scan when I just did one. Unless it means a full scan

Good work, I remember that there has been other similar problems where BITS service has been stopped.

Speedy thank you so much for a job well done! I so appreciate all the time you spent correcting this problem as it has been going on for such a long time. I just did a mse scan and they are all up to date thanks to you.
