Speedy can run you through it if you're unsure. It was definitely the problem for me because I changed the settings back to default and the updates stopped working again.

Try method 8 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997 works the majority of the time.

I can get the updates no prob and installs them but upon reboot the changes are "reverted".
#8 doesn't work.
#3 goes thru but says there are some corruption it is unable to fix but the process ends anyway. Doesn't work either.
#1 not that.
#2 doing that now ....

Ok ... done all the 12? solutions, doesn't help. There is no error code. It just says Yeserday 9:45 PM (Failed). View update history. Every line has failed. No error code. When it downloads and installs it, upon reboot it just says after 15% unsucessful reverting changes then allows me to boot into Windows normally.

Look in C:\windows\softwaredistribution\. Open the reportingevents txt file. Look at some of the text near the bottom. Anything here show any fails or errors??

Unlike the PC, the laptop went smoothly with 100+ MB updates.

I went back into Windows Update and just chose a few of the updates on the bottom of of the list. The first 3 worked fine. Then I chose about 18 of "Update of Windows 7 for x64 based Systems (KB2#####). That failed.

RE: that list.

Hmm 80071a90 maybe the error.

It looks like KB2647753 needs to be installed by itself. If this is one of the updates that hasn't been installed yet, install it by itself. Reboot if you have to, then install the rest of the updates

This is what it means (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows7/Windows-Update-error-80071A90). What AV / firewall is installed? If KB2647753 is installed, one of the updates may have to be installed by itself before you can install the others. I dont know if that fixiti works in Win7

Thanks Speedy. Doing the reboot now and I see MS has a fix on that ... maybe the AV locks some files up ....

Oops, I see KB2647753 is one of the updates that fail. Install it by itself then reboot then hopefully the other updates will install. One reason why it needs to be installed by itself. One of the other updates may install the same files, and trying to install both at the same file (the file whatever it is) maybe locked, so it cant update the same file twice

KB2647753 worked by itself, now doing the rest, fingers crossed :)

I am just using Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

Yes, installing 100s of updates can cause issues where updates to update are instigated before the original has been installed, especially with .net updates.
