Hi all,

I have VMware setup up at home, specs below;

1 x ESXi host (running vSphere 5 update 2)

Intel P8Z77 V-LX mobo
Intel i7 3770K CPU @ 3.4GHz (Quad Core so 8 logical CPU's available)
14GB DDR3 RAM (soon to be 20 or 32GB)
Additional TP-Link 1GB NIC (to provide teaming/redundancy)
4 x 500GB SATA disks
1 x 1TB SATA disk
8 port Netgear Gig switch

vCenter Server (Windows Server 2008 R2)

Intel D510M0 motherboard
Intel Atom D510 CPU @ 1.6GHz (64 bit, Quad Core)
1 x 250GB disk (OS)
1 x 500GB disk (to hold VMware Update Manager repository files)
On-board GB NIC
This box is also running as my secondary DNS server (replicated from the domain controller)

Guest VM's

1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller (Running AD and DNS)

1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard

I am struggling with the SQL server at present... cannot create a database at all... I can't even see the default instance in the object explorer, I followed an online guide for the SQL setup and everything went well but cannot create any DB's

I am hoping to get the following going...

System Center Operations Manager (Either 2007 R2 or 2012)
System Center Configuration Manager (2007 or 2012)
SharePoint Server (2010 or 2013)
Secondary Domain controller (Server 2012)

Naturally, all the above (apart from the 2nd DC) hinge on getting the SQL server running but in the mean time what other guest VM's would you run or recommend running?

I wouldn't run any until you get your ducks in a row with SQL screwing up... ;-)

Blow the sql server away and try is again. Recently I went through exercises of setting up sql 2000, 2005 and 2008, had no problems getting them going. Something must have been corrupted when setting it up.

Which one are you doing, standard? enterprise? dev?

Ok so spent the morning troubleshooting and found that some of the SQL services weren't running due to a password issue? I reset the password for the system accounts in AD and then restarted the services.

Now everything is going. I have managed to create a database for the SCOM server, hopefully the rest will fall into place.

Running SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard (x64)
