Windows 8 is mind blowing to a granny :)

A friend has just brought her kids HP laptops for Christmas do I need to do back up discs before they are set loose with them. Is there anything else I should do on them .... Im green as with this os system

Many thanks in anticipation to those who have way more knowledge.

Merry Christmas to all those helpers out there

1st thing I do is tidy up the start menu, dump odd all the ones you dont want. ( right click the one you dont want - select unpin from start at the bottom of the screen)

Before that remove the trial Norton ( if you dont want to use it) and put in something better, or use the inbuilt MSSE, ( actually called Windows defender) which is not the same as the earlier windows defender.

Make sure you have a good size data cap :) there are several hundred MB's of updates that will come through.

To find out a bit about it, you can download the free PDF http://marketing.dell.com/windows-8-ebook.

You dont need some programs, like PDF readers, the inbuilt works nice.

One 'trick" is after opening a window from the start menu, some get lost on how to close it - one way - move the mouse to the top of the screen, till it turns to a hand, left click and hold, drag down to bottom, window will close.

waitnutech: I have 2 questions:

1. How do I manage the start menu? No problem to unpin them (as already mentioned in your post), but when I try to group them (using left mouse to drag), e.g., drag Word and move it next to Excel, other items just move around like 'crazy'.

2. I have 2 user accounts created, when starting my PC, only the last signed in user is shown and I need to click the let arrow to make all user accound visible. How to make all user accounts visible when Windows starts up?

Cheers

Hi BK, yes the apps "flying" about can be a pain, all I do is move them about to where I Want and sometimes it is a bit of a shuffle, Mind you I dont have a lot on the start menu.

The following may or may not be of any help http://blogs.msdn.com/b/zxue/archive/2012/03/07/win8-howto-10-customize-metro-ui-app-tiles-and-groups.aspx

Heres mine form the lounge PC:

As for the login's, to be honest never had two or more, I dont actually have to sign in. BUT I'll load up a workshop PC and add a couple of accounts and see if I can answer your question ( unless someone else can beforehand).

BK--- Following on from above - Re show both users , found the following, changed the reg key with the script in option 1 ( Always_Show_All_Users_at_Sign-in.vbs) and is displayed both users as pictured:

Would probably pay to do recovery discs for each machine also.
I see that the COA's are inbuilt on the W8 brandname machines (matched to the OS and motherboard?), even more reason to back up the recovery partition/s (may not activate/authorise with any other OS install disk?).

Windows 8 has no "Windows"...
