trying to completely clear an old xp pc.
Download dban and burn the zip file to cd.
Boot to cd on pc but no response ... non-system disk etc

What am I doing wrong please ?

Did you get it from the Dban site?? Its not in zip format, you download an ISO file (http://www.dban.org/download) then burn it

yep but downloads and saves as a winzip file ?? should I rename it to iso file

Unless winzip is installed and its the default for ISO's?? What version of windows is it?

Ok, if winzip is installed / right mouse on the file you downloaded and select open with windows explorer. Then dbl click on it, it should burn it (dont unzip it). After you put a cdr in

thats what I think I am doing as it now says the file is already there replace ?
My cd burner has jammed on me now ..
Should it work off usb on boot

You could try this download then install Universal USB Installer. (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install-dban-to-a-usb-flash-drive-using-windows/)I've never tried it tho
