View Full Version : HP Simple Save portable HDD Freezes/stops responding

Hi peoples.

I have a 1TB HP Simple Save portable HDD. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. When I try to access certain folders on my portable HDD it stops responding and I have to close explorer. Or it stops responding for about 5 seconds then I can get into the folder. Even if I right click on a folder this will also happen. I have defraged it twice. With both Defragler and IObit Smart Defrag 2. It didn't help. Never used to have these problems.
If any of you people have a fix or a suggestion it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Is there anything in common with the folders that won't work? What do they contain, for example?

Try doing a chkdsk on it, sounds like it may have bad sectors/corrupted data on it.

(Good chance of this with portable drives).

Did you install the backup software that came with the HDD? I did with my new external and experienced major freezing. That was a WD though.

Laptop or PC ??
it could be a power save/sleep issue on the USB ports .

or simply the USB drive is dying .

A PC. No I have not installed any of the HP Simple Save software. Will do a Chkdsk.
Common folders that have problems...mainly the ones with heaps of gigabytes in them.

Any way to fix corrupted data??

Thanks guys.

Front USB ports or rear?

Rear. Wouldn't use the front as they are slower.
And it's not in a USB hub.

Wonder if this has anything to do with it?? (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/262977-32-hard-drive-hangs-freezes). The power settings for hard drives under power options?

Thanks Guys for the help. I right clicked on my HDD went to Properties>Tools>Disk Check.
Then ticked all the boxes and did the check and fixed the errors! Works like it should now.
